How Pages Outside the Top 10 Get Cited in AI Overviews
Pages that do not rank in Google's top 10 get cited in AI Overviews because citation and ranking now run on separate selection processes. Google breaks a query into sub-questions, then pulls the passage that answers each one most directly, regardless of where that page sits in the organic results.
What Does the Research Say About Ranking and Citation in AI Overviews?
That gap is the opening for any coaching practice or service business with a site too young to outrank established competitors. Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs in early 2026. Only 38 percent of cited pages also ranked in the top 10 for the same query. Seven months earlier, in the previous version of the same study, that figure was 76 percent.
The remaining citations split almost evenly. Around 31 percent came from pages ranking between positions 11 and 100, and another 31 percent came from pages that did not appear in the top 100 at all. BrightEdge ran a separate analysis on a different dataset and put the top-10 overlap closer to 17 percent. Moz found 88 percent of AI Mode citations came from outside the top 10.
Those numbers disagree because the studies measured different query sets in different months. The direction they point is identical. Ranking position and citation have pulled apart, and the gap widened quickly. Treating any single figure as settled would misrepresent the research. The reliable conclusion is directional.
Why Did Ranking and Citation Separate in AI Overviews?
Google does not answer a query by summarizing the top results. It fans the query out into sub-questions first. Someone looking for help with cold email deliverability generates sub-questions about warmup periods, domain authentication, sending volume, and spam triggers, and the system then looks for the passage that resolves each sub-question most cleanly. A page at position 24 that answers one sub-question in two clear sentences beats a page at position 3 that covers the same ground across four paragraphs. Extraction is a structural property of the page, and domain age does not change it.
What Does This Mean for a Coaching Practice or Service Business?
You are unlikely to outrank a competitor holding five years of accumulated links this year. That constraint is real, and publishing more pages does not solve it. Citation works on different terms. A page can be cited while sitting on page three if it answers the specific question your competitor's page skirts.
Three properties make a page extractable.
- Answer the question in the first two sentences under the heading that asks it. If an H2 poses a question, the answer belongs immediately below it. Context, caveats, and examples come after.
- Keep each answer self-contained. A passage gets lifted out of your page and placed in an answer with no surrounding context. Anything that depends on the previous paragraph to make sense will not survive the move.
- Write from work you have actually run. Specificity is the one input a competitor cannot generate from nothing: real numbers, real timelines, real constraints.
Does This Mean Backlinks and Rankings No Longer Matter?
Links have not stopped mattering. Top-10 ranking remains the strongest single signal for citation, and ranking still depends on authority. A site with no links ranks for very little, and pages that rank get cited at a higher rate than pages that do not.
Citation is a second door into search. It does not replace the first one. What changed is that the second door currently sits open to smaller sites, and most agencies serving coaches and service businesses are still optimizing only for the first.
Where Should You Start Structuring Pages for AI Overview Citation?
Open your highest-value service page and read each heading. Ask what question that heading implies, then read the two sentences directly below it. If those two sentences do not answer the implied question, that is your edit. It costs an afternoon and it changes what the page is eligible for. Our SEO and keyword strategy service covers this structural layer alongside standard on-page work.
FAQ: AI Overview Citations
Links are not a direct requirement for citation, but they remain a requirement for ranking, and ranking pages get cited more often. A page with no link equity can still be cited if it answers a sub-question more directly than the ranking pages do.
Citation depends on the page being crawled and indexed first, which usually takes days to weeks on a new domain. There is no fixed timeline after that. Pages answering low-competition, specific questions tend to surface faster than pages targeting broad terms.
Schema helps machines parse your content, and testing shows measurable lift on some page types. It works as a support signal, not a replacement for clear answers. A well-structured page without schema will outperform a poorly written page with it.
They share most of the same foundation: crawlability, clear structure, and content quality. The difference is what each rewards. SEO rewards pages that satisfy a query overall, while citation rewards passages that resolve one specific sub-question in isolation.
